Pumping & Pressure Control

Client Situation

During a workover operation in Pozo Cerro Verde (TD: 2,850 m), the operator experienced unexpected pressure spikes while circulating out gas influx.

Wellhead pressure: 1,450 psi (unstable).
Annular returns: erratic, indicating poor pressure control.
Existing equipment: aging 10k BOP stack, limited choke manifold capacity. The situation posed high risks of kick escalation and well control incident.

Intervention

BJ deployed an integrated pumping and surface pressure control package, including:

1.High-pressure pumping units (15k psi rating) to manage kill mud circulation.
2.Upgraded choke manifold & remote control system for precise backpressure management.
3.Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) equipment installed to stabilize annular pressure.
4.Continuous pressure testing & certification performed on BOP and surface lines before resuming operations.

Results Achieved

Well stabilized in <12 hrs with controlled Circulation.

Wellhead pressure reduced from 1,450 psi → 450 psi safely.

No formation influx after intervention.

Operator avoided potential well control event and reduced NPT by 3 days.
